Scaling and
root planing

What is scaling and root planing?1

The buildup of plaque and tartar occurs in advanced gum disease or periodontitis. Scaling expertly excavates stubborn plaque and tartar lurking beneath the gumline. Meanwhile, root planing tenderly soothes the tooth root, helping reattach to its rightful place upon the gum.

What to avoid in the first
24 hours3:

  • Intense physical activity is not encouraged, but returning to work immediately is allowed.
  • Drinking using straws or engaging in sucking motions.
  • Abstain from smoking for at least 48 hours to support optimal healing.
  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages may hinder the healing process.
  • Steer clear of foods that are hot or spicy.
  • Refrain from using mouthwashes containing alcohol. Opt for gentler alternatives instead.

How will it feel
(during scaling)1,2

Local anesthesia is administered to sensitive and diseased gum tissue. For teeth that are sensitive to cleaning, a desensitising paste is recommended to provide sensitivity relief. It may take two to four visits to remove the plaque buildup, depending on the severity of the condition. Once this is completed, periodontal surgery will take place thereafter,
if necessary.

After care tips4

  • Take a non-aspirin pain reliever to ease any discomfort or tenderness.
  • Brush your teeth gently in the treated area on the first night. Then, reintroduce flossing with light pressure gradually in the days to come.
